I agree that this is a bit lugubrious. One thing you can do, especially if you're going to stay in that chat window for a while and not want to navigate outside the application, is to turn off cursor tracking, with VO Shift F3. The first time you start typing, your edit point and mouse cursor will move into the text window, but your VO cursor will stay in the HTML content window. Now, all you have to do the next time something comes in is to VO right arrow once to hear it. Just remember to turn cursor tracking back on again if you \ outside this chat window, with another toggle of VO Shift F3.
