Hi Felix, It's not possible to use the voices for the new 3G iPod Shuffle for any other purposes and it's also not possible to use third-party voices (e.g., in other languages) for the new iPod Shuffle spoken menus. This issue came up in questions to Assistiveware about the Infovox iVox voices, because there are some voices that are on the new Shuffle that don't have corresponding general language packs for the Mac (like Mandarin Chinese), and there are some new Infovox iVox voices that can be used with the Mac that support languages that aren't included for the new Shuffle (like Russian). Here's the reply that David Niemeijer posted at the Assistiveware forums:
"I now have confirmation from Apple. You cannot use those iTunes voices for other applications because of license restrictions and you cannot use Mac voices you may have installed for iTunes to use on the new shuffle." On a slightly different topic, earlier you asked about reading Safari web pages and there was also some followup discussion by Anne and others to a later related post about selecting and reading large amounts of text from a web page. Anne alluded to the fact that many of use shortcuts to "Start speaking text" from the Services menu (speech submenu). I also sometimes use a shortcut to "New window containing selection" from the Services menu (TextEdit submenu) that gives complementary functionality by sending the selection to a TextEdit window, and recently discussed this method in a post about Zoom text, low-vision functionality at: http://www.mail-archive.com/macvisionaries@googlegroups.com/msg00719.html (Re: Zoom Text on Mac Question [was Re: iTunes/iPod Shuffle Problem]) I'm mentioning it here, because a lot of discussion gets lost, especially extensive replies to new list members who tend to post their questions by replying to the middle of an existing thread on a different topic. Using TextEdit is particularly useful for languages other than English since the letters and accents get announced (for example, when you switch input language keyboards, even in the case of non-Roman characters such as Greek or Russian). However, regardless of that there are some very neat features. The Services menu operations (whether setting selections to be spoken or to TextEdit) don't get copied to the clipboard (it's not like doing a copy and paste into TextEdit or to start speaking), so there's lower overhead on systems resources. In the case of pages with lots of animated graphics, none of this gets sent over to TextEdit, but links are still clickable to bring up content in Safari if they use full addresses (not Java scripts). I can get content from web pages with problematic HTML elements where I can't interact, but where I can simply click in the window and select all with Command-A, then use my shortcut to send the selection to a TextEdit window. The URL I gave is to the Mail Archive secondary archives that starting picking up this list at the end of February. (Easier to search and navigate with VoiceOver than out main Google Groups pages). Take a look at the discussion and links at the end of that post if you're interested.
