Hey Dean,

Your son will need to either be running a digidesign or m-audio
interface if it's pro tools LE he's after.  Good news is that there's
some pretty cool interfaces at the moment.  Bad news is that VO and
pro tools is currently a total non-starter, IE, not accessible in the
slightest.  Sorry to be the bearer of bad news man.
