VO-right and select "Run Shell Script" under the Actions table after you've selected the Utilities library. Double-click (VO-Shift-Space) to add the action to your workflow. You paste your shell script into the area where you hear "edit text" in the "Run Shell Script" action. You can set the shell you're scripting for (if it isn't bash) in a popup button. Similarly, when I run an AppleScript in an automator action I can paste it into the "edit text" area.
