Hey All, as I'd mentioned earlier this week, this latest list change in response policy was on a trial basis.
Over the last few days, I've received both commendations and complaints about such. Unfortunately, the amount of complaints, and situations that this change has caused, bring me to my decision to restore the list settings to the way they've been before this past Tuesday. I.e. replies will now go to the list by default, and if a user would like to respond directly to a poster, that user will need to specifically locate that person's address in message headers and send a private note. I've come to this decision for the following reasons: • At present, if a list subscriber sets their mail preference to 'no mail' so that they will visit the site for the list content, it's currently possible that that user will still end up receiving list mail in their local inbox with no way for the user to stop this from happening. -and, I might add, this is exactly what's now going on. So, in essence, a lister has no actual control over whether they receive list mail or not. As the list is now, a user must rely on other listers to remember to check their to and CC fields before they post a message. this is simply unacceptable to me. If a user doesn't want email coming directly to them, they need to have the final word on such. They cannot be simply hoping that someone else across the world that they've never met will take the time to check their email settings before they send a note. • If I simply stop the listserve from setting any kind of reply field and completely leave this up to all users, this still doesn't solve the issue. Many users don't either know how, or care to take the time to set their response preferences so once again, we're left with a situation where for whatever reason, a lister may end up receiving direct mail whether they want it or not. As well, this may also very much hurt the list as it has the distinct possibility, based on what's happened this week, to completely decentralize this list, and that's simply not something I will allow to happen. So I find myself brought to the conclusion that we need to change the list reply settings back to what they were. I believe despite any previous issues with notes that for one reason or another, some of us might find distracting or such, that this change will ultimately be the better one. At least this way, if need be, I as list mod can moderate list traffic if it becomes an issue. I most definitely don't want this type of solution, but the point is that with settings which direct people's responses to a single list address by default, it can be more easily managed. People can set themselves to go 'no mail' if they choose, and they can pretty much be assured that they'll receive none from the list, and they can browse at their convenience. Newbies will not need to wonder why their filters aren't working because their seeing their own responses come back at them from other listers instead of the list itself. etc, etc, etc… I'm sorry to those who liked this change. I really did want to give it a try, as this is something we'd been talking about. However, it really has caused more problems than it has solved. -And, as this list by it's very nature will attract peeps whom are just getting to know their systems and such, and are here looking for help in learning, this problem will not go away. As many have said, many lists have responses sent list-wide by default, so new users honestly cannot and should not be expected to know everything about the finer points of their email clients and such. So I do believe this change really is better for everyone. thanks to you all for reading, and I'll plan on restoring list settings back to their previous state tomorrow evening. (Monday evening -United States PST) HOpe all is well with everyone and talk with y'all soon!… Smiles, Cara :) --- View my Online Portfolio at: http://www.onemodelplace.com/CaraQuinn --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group.
