Have you tried running the firmware update binary from a Mac OS X install CD?

However, if one uses Ubuntu as one's only operating system on a MBP, you can no longer profit from bug fixes coming with EFI updates. Would it be possible and legal to implement an Ubuntu EFI updater into Ubuntu 8.10 or later? EFI updates are available on Apple's website.
