Since I have this error I can no longer change my layout using keyboard shortcuts ( Alt + Shift in my case ) Also whenever I try to change the shortcut for layout toggle, I am met with the error message. Same message shows up whenever I log in first, from suspension, or from a locked screen. sometimes this error message stacks up to 20 messages when I unlock the screen.

A correct solution requires that Preferences > keyboard (or a similar GUI configuration tool) set the keyboard correctly, without requiring editing of xorg.conf. Possibly it will need changed to not update gconf but rather update the xorg.conf file directly.
