Workaround for this bug is to uncheck the "Use ambient light to adjust LCD brightness" which is found on the "General" tab in Gnome's Power management preferences.
The patch is in the source for applesmc-dkms - 0.14.4-0ubuntu1~mactel- support1~jaunty5 from 2009-05-10 but still the screen is randomly dimmed very low after a short time.
