MacPorts on Tiger

I am getting back to macports, after a couple of years, becouse I manage 
to install Tiger (10.4) on my iBookG4, but I got the surprise of not 
finding any installation package for system older than Leopard!
So I decided to try to compile it by myself.
Is it something teoreticaly affordable? Are still reachable 
documentation on the starting requirement (version of XCode/development 
environment)?
Are out there anyone still using macports on OSX-Tiger?
