provide such support and when did they pull it?

It was actually pretty formal...

From 2006 through 2016, Apple hosted an umbrella site for some key open source projects called "Mac OS Forge" which has a tombstone page at macosforge.org. The departure of MacPorts from Mac OS Forge as it was being wound down was announced in https://lists.macports.org/pipermail/macports-dev/2016-August/033405.html
