it all depends on what you mean by ‘written from scratch’, ‘evolved from’, and 
how detailed you care to be with the history. I believe you’re either 
conflating 4.2BSD (1983) and FreeBSD 4.1 (2000) or you’re thinking about 
userspace stuff that got updated in Mac OS X (around 2000 IIRC).
