do you really need it to be ppc64?

Probably not, however this is the first time I've encountered what seems to be
a ppc64 specific error. I could recompile all packages to ppc but before that I
want to be sure it's absolutely required. I have a lot of packages installed
and my server environment is working well.

If you don't need the larger address space, I don't know of any benefit to
ppc64 (as opposed to on x86, where 64 bit has a few other advantages).

One other thing to note, before I came back to Mac OS, the same machine had been running Debian and before that Gentoo. While they are both Linux distros they both compiled glib2 just fine under ppc64. Perhaps the differences are too great? A bit beyond my pay grade so to speak, so if I don't manage to resolve this I'll probably recompile the lot when I next get the chance.
