Not what I was asking, and I wouldn't be asking if I couldn't think of a few reasons. For instance, a port that has an optional useful dependency on an expensive port via a variant could draw attention to the fact the dependency is already installed by making the variant default even if the dependency is not currently active. My real interest here lies in my Linux adaptation, where some additional considerations are at play.
