I thought it was not recommended, because of the bugs that other makes have with VPATH, but saying that it is not supported when a trivial fix might make it work is a bit harsh. Maybe a better way to word it is that we don't always go out of our way to ensure VPATH builds work with non-GNU makes, as it is not necessarily a primary design goal. However, VPATH builds of m4 certainly work with at least Solaris make. If we can determine an easy workaround for the IRIX make bug tickled here, and document it properly in the autoconf manual, I think it would be wiser for gnulib to support this particular usage.
