Hello, I have never had any trouble with Gentoo on two different hardware platforms, using minicom. Both lacked a real serial port so I used USB-serial adapter.
There could be issues if you aren't allowed to access the serial port, you need to belong to the group. And there is variation in the quality of serial-USB adapters. Connecting to a raspberry pi didn't seem to give any headaches, either, and it was also running some linux distro (probably one of those ugly things with systemd....)
