Excuse me for joining this thread late, but I have a comment that might be pertinent. I have found that some .pdf files display a black box where images should appear when I use xpdf, but not when I use mupdf, epdfview, or acroread. The the view the same regardless of pdf viewer? If so, then my comment is not useful. Rich
