I checked the path prefix as you suggest and /opt/local/bin is in fact listed, as is /usr/local/bin/ where a slightly older version of convert exists. Since /opt/local/bin is first in the list, presumably the convert there is used, but which one is used shouldn't matter, I suppose. So the path list shouldn't be the problem.
