I recommend using the KOMA class scrbook, which is highly configurable (via the "LaTeX preamble") and well documented (via the scrguide.pdf (German) and scrguien.pdf (English) user guide). KOMA may even already automatically adapt the layout if you select the papersize with the correct option (not via another package or settings "by hand"). Günter
