Please step at least one time through the LyX tutorial that you find in LyX's help menu. This takes you only an hour or two and then you know all the basics.
For more detailed information about images and Floats, see the either the UserGuide sec. 4.4 and 4.6 or, more detailed, he EmbeddedObjects manual chapter 1 and 3.

PS: I recognise that it's mostly my problem, but I have trouble with some of the LyX documentation;
The Intro manual consists of only a few pages and gives you an overview about the documentation files. In the Tutorial you learn how to Navigate easily through large files like the userGuide.
