There could be many reasons, one is that they are not rendered at small resolutions if not fitting on the pixel-grid of the monitor. * is the space of the en-dash kept or does the text following "close the gap"? * does the en-dash show at higher resolution/magnification? * does the en-dash appear if you copy and paste the text portion in an editor? * does it appear in print? * does using a different font solve the problem? * does using a different PDF-Viewer solve the problem?
