Great example. I agree that this would be nice. It's not impossible. See, for example: http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=MTI3NDc But I doubt that it will ever happen for something like LyX. I think a more practical alternative in this case would be to use SSH with X. I guess your point though is that the pixel doesn't even allow you to use SSH? In this case, I wonder if there are web services that implement this (through Java?). I know that Amazon has a web SSH client that allows you to connect to an instance but I don't imagine it can do X.
