I think I answered my own question there. It seems to come down to that issue: no easy route from XeTeX to LaTeX for latex2rtf to work. Kinda obvious I guess! All this so I can give my thesis chapters to supervisors in Word for feedback via track changes. I think it would have been simpler to just install LyX on their machines...
