Coincidently I discussed this just a couple of days ago: http://yihui.name/en/2012/10/lyx-vs-latex/
LyX is absolutely a big time-saver. My productivity was boosted by 300% after using raw LaTeX for 5 years, since I would never be lost in nested itemized environments, or math equations, or (sub){0,2}sections, or \includegraphics{}. Everything is so clear.
