Yes it can (I just verified knitr under 2.0.4). You do not need the old hack of branches any more.
However, I should warn you about one problem: at the moment, the main document and the child document are compiled *independently* by two R sessions, which means the R objects in two documents cannot be shared between them because they are in different workspaces.
