Thanks Liviu. It actually works. For anyone else interested: From the second link, download Gnumeric (I had to ALT-click on the download link), unrar the .dmg and place the app in your applications folder. Now, while Gnumeric itself doesn't work on Lion, I just entered this path /Applications/Gnumeric.app/Contents/MacOS into LyX, reconfigured, restarted and it works for e.g. *.xls spreadsheets.
