Then we're simply back to square one, since that's what I was originally doing:

I suspect that its mapped to
something else on mine: The status bar shows "Scripts" and the cursor
becomes tiny. When i try typing what your wrote below as soon as it hits the
"<" it just jumps right out of TeX mode again
