Actually, that would be the main distribution tree. The local TEXMF tree would normally be under your user directory. On linux it is usually ~/texmf, on the mac I suspect it probably is ~/Library/texmf or perhaps ~/Application Support/texmf. Mac people would know more. As a general rule, it is always better to put your personal additions to the tex collection in your lcal tree. That way they will not be overrun/erased/forgotten when you update texlive.
