Well, that's exactly the issue. IF your publisher does the typesetting, THEN you can forget about LaTeX. What happens more and more frequently, though, is that your publisher will give you a set of guidelines set up for Microsoft Word and will want a pdf back. At that point getting to know LaTex is inevitable. I do agree with you, Uwe: concentrate on writing, not on typesetting. However, know your typesetting fate before you start to write and choose the right options (including whther to buy a LaTeX book or not)---it will make everything simpler later on.
