It's a bit complicated to explain. Here's the key sequence (again using the xcolor package): 1. Insert > Math > Display Formula. 2. (in the math inset) Type '\fcolorbox\{'. 3. The '\{' creates an inset where you type 'black'. 4. Move the cursor just outside '{black}', type '\{' again, and fill in 'red'. 5. Move the cursor just outside '{red}' and type '\{\ensuremath' followed by a space. The function name will disappear and you'll have yet another inset. 6. Type your formula in the last inset and exit the display formula. Paul
