Using acroread I managed to play video embedded in PDF, on Linux. Try
to open the 'movie15' example on CTAN [1] and you will have acroread
asking if you wanted to play the file externally, and then firing up
VLC. So I guess it depends what format you're embedding and how, and
how much luck you've got.
