Thanks for the help.  Essentially I have not fixed the problem but PDFLatex 
works fine as a work around.  

I am grateful to this entire volunteer enterprise.

There were lots of such errors in the TeXLive 2011 packages for Fedora at one 
point. Something to do with the font maps not being updated properly. I don't 
know if there's a connection, though.
