I'm no TeXpert, but TeX maintains a database of package locations, which it uses when searching for a particular package. The texhash and mktexlsr commands (I believe texhash is just an alias for mktexlsr) update that database by adding files in or underneath the directory in which the command is run. I'm not positive, but I think they also remove from the database any previously added directories that no longer exist. Paul
