Thanks for the tip - Sigil looks great.

The book is 500 pages and has over a hundred figures and lots of
equations. So I'll do some perl scripting to automate the inclusion of
PNGs rather than EPS and PDF. I knew it wasn't going to be easy.

Thank you SO much for LyX. It's a joy to use. The epub export in 2.1
sounds like a dream come true.
