Your hunch was correct. After checking "Vector graphics format" on those formats it works correctly. This is the second misconfiguration that I've fixed recently. I wonder how these crept in. I think I'll be safe and just move the ~/.lyx folder out of the way and let lyx reconfigure itself from scratch. Thanks for your help, Brendon
