Go to Prefs > Files > Formats, select your format of choice (LyX 1.6.x), copy the Short name ('lyx16x'), go to Edit > Bindings and create a 'buffer-export lyx16x' binding. If all went fine, it will be listed in File > Export alongside the LyX 1.6.x item. You can use teh same command for the menu or toolbar items.
