You first need to insert a displayed formula Ctrl+Shift+M. In inline formulas LaTeX doesn't allow linebreaks.

No. LyX is not a text editor. But you can enter LaTeX code directly to formulas. For more info about LyX's math features, have a look at the Math manual that you find in the Help menu. regards Uwe
