I have a table with images in a row. First column has paragraph cells
with row descriptions. Unfortunately I can not figure out how to align
the text vertical such that it is at the top of the row. I tried
diffrent settings and also used a parbox enclosing the images, but the
text in the first column is always aligned to the bottom. When I try to
use 'top' alignment for the column the outcome is even worse, as the
text is beneath the baseline.

Option 1: Do nothing with the images. Insert custom vertical space after the label in the first column (Insert > Formatting > Vertical Space ... with Spacing = Custom) and fiddle with the amount of space to achieve the desired effect.

Option 2: Do nothing with the label. Embed the images in boxes (either minipages or parboxes). In the vertical alignment section of the settings dialog for each box, leave the Box value at Top, but change the Content value to Bottom (although Middle seems to work just as well).

Option 2 requires less tweaking, but the label text aligns with vertical space that LaTeX inserts above the images. Option 1 allows the images to be flush with the top of the table row, and gives you more control over exactly where the label appears, but it requires manual tweaking.
