These are probably the log files and the auxiliary files. "Useless" is 
certainly a matter of interpretation. These files are useful, but they are 
usually not needed anymore after the production of the PDF/DVI file finished.

You do not need such a utility with LyX. LyX does the compilation in a 
temporary directory, which is deleted when you end the session.
