crashes with templates

Lyx 1.6.4.1 on OS X 10.5.8 crashes when opening a document (either 
new or created with Lyx 1.5.x) using any template. 
Preferences:Path:Document Templates points to /Users/<user 
name>/Library/Application Support/LyX-1.6/templates.

Advice?
