Phantom spaces

In the attached lyx file, phantom at the beginning of a line results in a new-line. I have to use ctrl-space and insert a hard space to get the phantom to take any effect.

I'm also thinking what about a phantom text style (as text styles can be nested) but this might need whatever magic is required to get phantom to work at the start of a line.
