Interesting. I was trying to do exactly the same thing as you a week ago and, like you, came to the conclusion it was fiendishly difficult. In the end I settled for putting all the figures at the beginning of each chapter and following this with the text. Actually, this probably works better for my purpose, but I thought I was probably being wimpish by not being able to implement the L/R split. But now I feel a bit better about my failure.
