You were right but I was not wrong :-)

I put the word "openany" without the quotes into Options text box of the 
Document->Settings->DocumentClass dialog box to cure the problem, just as 
both you and Jean-Marc Lasgouttes suggested. Thanks to both of you.

The default in a brand new LyX document for which I've selected the book 
document class and one side printing is that chapters start on any page even 
if Document->Settings->DocumentClass->Options is blank. That's why I said I 
wasn't wrong.

However, when I selected my own document class derived from Book, it suddenly 
did OpenRight when the Document->Settings->DocumentClass->Options is blank 
and single sided printing has been selected. Some time when I have time I'll 
isolate the difference down to a specific variable. I have a hunch but don't 
have time to prove or disprove that if I'd created a Book derived document 
class that did absolutely no change to Book, it would still default to 
OpenRight.

Anyway, thanks a lot for helping me with that. You saved a couple hours of 
troubleshooting.
