The status is that bibtopic (as the only one of those packages) is natively 
supported by LyX (only for divided bibliographies, though, not for per-chapter 
bibliographies).
The "Additional Features" (a.k.a "Extended") manual of LyX describes the use 
of bibtopic (also for chapter bibliographies) in sec. 3.1.2 and 3.1.3.

I have used both bibtopic and bibunits and found both easy to use. They differ 
conceptually, so your choice depends on what you need and on your personal 
workflow.

Since I switched to biblatex now, I would probably use its capabilities to 
produce such bibliographies. If you are at the beginning of a project, 
considering biblatex is advised. It is not (yet) natively supported by LyX, 
but it can be used with some effort (cf. the wiki).
