Thanks for the reply. I'm a beginner so I'm not exactly sure what you mean though. What is an alpha-type citation?

This error persists with different styles I tried, e.g. plainnat and only seems to be solved by plain.

Is there a way to get around this since my references have to be in a certain format?

This looks like you're using one of the alpha-type citations, in which case something like the key should be printed.
