Document classes are not to be changed. What you need to do is to choose a document class and use its power. For a thesis I can recommend to use the document class "book(koma script)" or "report(koma script)". Both document classes depend on the koma script LaTeX class which provides you everything you need for a thesis like automatic print space calculation, formatting of page headers and footers, binding correction, formatting of title pages, ...
koma script has an excellent documentation, search the web for the file "scrguien.pdf" regards Uwe
