Yes, that is what "empty" means. No headers at all. Not of any kind.
I'm using svmult.cls from Springer and I need to overwrite the page
number feature to meet the requirements of a paper.
If none of the predefined header formats is right for you, set the page
style to "fancy". This doesn't do what you want immediately, but it
opens up for header customization. You'll need to put some latex
commands in the preamble, that defines exactly how you want the headers.
Look at the documentation for the fancyhdr latex package for details.
