I'm also stuck in the OS X 10.3.9 universe, happily using LyX 1.3.7. I did try the LyX 1.5 series of releases, but performance was never quite satisfactory on OS X 10.3.9. Others may have had more success with newer versions of LyX on 10.3.9?
