Or, use ERT and custom environments for the entire frontmatter instead of trying to shoehorn your document class into doing the job. I use ERT and custom environments. I don't even use the Author and Title environments. It works wonderfully. My justification for this is that environments are meant to promote consistency throughout your document, but there's very little consistency in frontmatter -- it's all one-off type of stuff.
