I tried this on linux, but it didn't work.

I copied /usr/share/lyx1.6/ui/stdtoolbars.inc to ~/.lyx1.6/ui/ and edited as 
suggested, but I see no new menu entries under 'view'

(I installed lyx1.6 using --with-version-suffix=1.6)
