Problem solved. I uninstalled MikTex 2.6 and Lyx 1.6rc5 and then reinstalled BOTH using the Lyx 1.6rc5 installer (before I installed Lyx and told it to use the existing MikTex). The MikTex installed is 2.7 by the way, but I don't know if this was the problem or not.
